Behind the Bhangra
...with LPD & Ashke
Monday 1 March, 2010
Students from Queen Mary's University & St Bart's have entered a team in The Bhangra Showdown, the only university bhangra competition in the UK, since it's inception. In 2009, they placed first and in 2010 they came a very close second. The team is made up of two sections: LPD, the boys; and Ashke, the girls.
Ashke (pronounced Ash-keh not Aashqui) take the essence of traditional Punjabi folk dancing and create a vibrant and energetic display of Bhangra and Gidha, leaving you wanting more! Lishkareh Punjab De (LPD) specialise in traditional bhangra and gidha - their aim is to take UK Punjabi culture back to its roots, which is evident from the performances, to the outfits and props.
We went back to school with the students to find out a little more about them, their thoughts on Punjabi culture and the team itself.
